The Pat on Sports: Craziness in Cougarland

I honestly have to say this basketball season is not at all what I expected. I expected a nice normal season. Apparently what we got is something right out of some 80’s sports comedy movie.
I don’t think anybody could have foreseen seven starting players walking off the court with over half the season to go. I also don’t think anybody would have guessed that Corey Minton, having made the decision to stick out the season and finish out his senior year, would go down to an ankle injury. This leaves Jonathon Green as the lone team member that started the season on the team that was there when the season began.
There were tryouts to replace the departed team this week. Friday they will debut against the Dragons of Clinton. This will be a baptism by fire for the new team.
Who know what will happen here. If Scott Bakula and Sinbad taught me anything in the 80’s it is that anything can happen with team like this. In fact this could turn out to be a very pleasant surprise to us all. I seriously think this team could surprise a few people.
Judging from what I read on the message board the last couple of days, and there has been a ton of new posts to read, this team will have plenty of support. I really hope this is the case. These kids are willing to step in to a difficult situation and try to do something good for their school.
I still do not know what the final breaking point was for the seven who quit. I know these kids and this doesn’t seem like something they would do lightly. It could not have been easy for them.
By the same token it could not have easy on Coach Pierce and Coach Green. They have put in a lot of time as a coaching staff. Now they have to teach a new team the offense and defense.
This is a no win situation in a lot of ways. The seven who quit will have to wait till AAU season to play organized ball again. The kids that are on the team now are in a tough spot. The coaching staff has their work cut out for them.
I really hope the community comes out top support this new team. These kids do not deserve to be punished for what has gone on.
I also do not feel that a coaching change can happen because of this. Every coach in the county becomes a hostage if this happens. Unfortunately with the great minds that run our school system that is possible.
Who would even want to come here and coach if that happened? It is tough enough to convince an outsider to come here. I know there are some great coaches here in the county. But there are a lot of ham and eggers out there also. I’d like to at least have the option for outsiders coming in to coach here.
No coach will ever please everybody. You could bring in John Turnblazer, Vic King, or Bobby Knight and there would still be somebody complaining. I will be there supporting the athletes no matter who is coaching. I hope you all will be too.
