The Pat on Sports: News and Notes

There is a lot going on in the local and national sports world right now and I thought this week would be a good chance to touch on some of those points.
Of course if you watch TV or read the newspapers you know that Bearden head football Coach Bill Wilson suffered a fatal heart attack over the weekend. There isn’t much I can say about the man that has not already been said. Judging from things I have read in newspapers and on various blogs throughout the internet he was truly the epitome of what a coach should be. Not only his former players but students and staff in general loved him very much. They don’t make many like him anymore. I am glad I had a chance to know him and I am glad one of my best friends had a chance to coach under him. Bill Wilson will be missed but his contributions to West High School and Bearden High School will be remembered for many years to come.

Rumor is that we have a new basketball coach at CCHS and that he isn’t a local or part of the “coaching rotation”. I am glad to hear this. The way the politicians, and I firmly believe it was the politicians that forced the firing of Len Pierce, handled the coaching change was atrocious. With this behind us though I wish the new coach the best of luck. Yes, Len pierce was a friend of mine but he is gone and probably happy it is all over. It is time to get behind the new coach and support Cougar basketball the way it once was.
Kylie Henegar made varsity cheerleader at Tusculum College over the weekend. She is the latest in a long line of great athletes to from our county to make college cheerleader. Kylie is a hard worker and will do well there.
Brance Stiner recently accepted a football scholarship as well. Brance has been a great leader for Cougar football and will do well on the college level. He has a good arm, good speed, and is a general on the field. We don’t see many Cougar football players get a chance to play on the next level so it is particularly sweet to see Brance make it.
I am only briefly going to touch on the Virginia Tech tragedy. It was a bad situation. I am glad to see the sports teams there carrying on. Sports are one excellent way to help the campus community heal. After terrorists attacked us on 9/11 the nation was in shock. Sports helped many people get their minds off the tragedy.
The NFL draft is coming up. It is my favorite time of the spring. Next week I will give you my draft views.
