The Pat on Sports: Let’s hear it for Lady Cougar’s softball

The softball team and football team at CCHS have something in common. They both have had very limited success over the years. A few years back, when I was newly promoted sports editor of the Volunteer Times, the football Cougars exploded with an unprecedented winning season and trip to the playoffs.
Now the Lady Cougar softball team seems to be on the verge of a similar run. At this point in the season they have already won more games than they won last year. I hope this is just the start of a good run for them.
Most people think track when they think spring sports at CCHS, and rightly so. Baseball gets some good coverage and tennis also sees a lot of press considering they have the shortest spring sports schedule.
Softball has always been the poor stepchild in this area. This year could be the year their fortunes are reversed. They have some veteran talent on the team and an outstanding freshman pitcher.
This season they even beat the Lady Wildcats of Oak Ridge. Beating Oak Ridge in any sporting event is a huge accomplishment.
I hope all of this translates into a healthy run in the post-season tournament.
I also have heard rumors of discontent amongst the baseball players with their new coach. I have to give them some credit if that is the case.
These boys are still on the field playing ball. There was no walkout. No big protest. No need to have tryouts for a new team.
The baseball team did not follow the new precedent set by the county and try to get the coach fired. They did what players saddled with coaches they don’t like have done for years. They went out and played ball anyway.
I know there is talent on that baseball team. I have been to two games so far and they have looked good.
I know the athletic ability is on the baseball team. Just from the fact I know there are several multisport athletes on it. Heck Corey Minton is on the team and if I had to draft a team for any sport with the talent that is at CCHS he would be my number one pick.
I guess I will close by touching on the Don Imus remark. Imus is a hack. He has not been relevant as a talk show host since Howard Stern came onto the scene. I tried to listen to him once on whatever network simulcasts his show in the mornings. It is terrible. I love talk radio but if my choices were listening to Don Imus or listening to two cats clawing each other to death I would choose the cats. I am sure his tens of fans loved his remarks about the young women of the Rutgers basketball team. I love the fact that I can’t accidentally hear him on my TV in the mornings now. Anybody who wears a cowby hat indoors is behind the times and Imus is certainly that. Good riddance to him.
