The Pat on Sports: The Madness has begun

It has started. The best post season in sports. I think we all know here that I am not a huge basketball fan. In fact I rarely watch it past the high school level, even if UT is playing. But there is something about the month of March that makes me a fan.
One thing I like about it is the fact a team can screw up all year and as long as they can get their act together and win their conference tournament they can have a shot at the glory. The Lady Vols pulled this off a few years ago. After an extremely sub par season they rebounded in the SEC tournament and eventually won the Big Dance.
Another great thing is all the small schools that are vying for a title. For most it is a pipe dream, but as we all know that is why you play the game. Look at EKU. Last night for a few minutes they had the score very close with North Carolina (and many see the Tar Heels winning the title). No it didn’t last but they represented the Ohio Valley Conference very well.
There are also plenty of good stories that come from this tourney. There was something that seemed right yesterday about Rick Pitino being in Rupp Arena as something other than an adversary of the Big Blue.
So many other sports could learn from this post season. College football could really have something special if they could do a playoff format like this. I know that will never happen but one can dream.
It should be a fun ride this season. There are a ton of fun teams in the tournament. VCU has upset Duke. They could be the Cinderella team of this tourney.
Of course UT plays Long Beach State today. This is a dreaded match up between a five seed and a twelve seed. These are the games that tend to produce upsets. UT will really have to step up to the plate. A team like LBS can really get happy during a game like this and UT is not the most consistent of finishers out there. Then again according to my basketball brackets there are a few people that see UT as a Final Four or even national championship team. I hope you are right.
I personally see a football rematch between Ohio State and the Florida Gators this year. I also see the Gators repeating as champs.
I want to thank everybody that got in on my NCAA bracket contest. I did this last year on my other website and had a modest turnout. This year has been great. I am looking forward to doing more contests like this. I will be running fantasy football from here in the fall and hopefully will have some great prizes to give out.
