The Pat on Sports:
Year of the Cornbread

To say it was an unusual season for Cougar basketball would be an understatement. Everybody that reads this site and its message boards already knows about it by now and I won’t bore you with that again.
I want to talk about a remarkable young man named Cory “Cornbread” Minton. I am sure a lot of you out there know him. He is a fairly quiet young man. But on the court/field/diamond his actions speak very loudly.
He was the only original senior on this year’s basketball team. He certainly made the most of it. He led the team in scoring on most games. His ball handling skills are second to none. My good friend Steve Jennings of Clinton Cards, Comics, and Collectables called him the best guard in the area. Steve is a Clinton Loyalist and sees almost every team Clinton plays. This is a high compliment coming from him. In fact he came to CCHS one night just to see Cornbread play.
Cornbread also became a member of a very exclusive club this year when he was named Prepxtra player of the week. He joins Chris Johnson and Sierra Jessie as the only players from CCHS to have earned that honor.
Now he will take his considerable talent to the baseball diamond. Cornbread should have a great season there as well. I look forward to seeing what he and his teammates do this year.
I also hear that Bryan College, also home of former Cougar Matt Housely, is looking at him from a basketball standpoint. I know he would do well there. I also would think some schools would be looking at him for baseball. If none of that were to work out I’d sure love to have him to play rugby.
I also want to talk about the Lady Cougars lone senior this year as well, Nancy Reynolds.
Nancy really came into her own this year.
She has always been a great athlete and had a great work ethic. This year she was lone senior among a talented group of underclassmen. I think she deserves a lot of recognition.
I want to thank Cornbread and Nancy for all the years they have contributed to local athletics. I wish them well in their future endeavors. I will miss covering you guys.
