The Pat on Sports: Why do the good die young?

I am sure by now all of you know of the passing of Garrett Johnson. Garrett was a former Cougar athlete and a big supporter of Cougar athletics.
I talked sports with Garrett on many occasions and he always had a lot to say about local sports. He was always extremely positive and had great things to say about the local sports scene.
It seems like not long ago I wrote the same thing on the passing of Drew Lasley. Another long time supported of Campbell County athletics.
Three years ago I wrote a similar column on the passing of Aaron Jordan. I also had to write about the passing of Jessie Johnson.
Many years ago I suffered through the loss of my closest friend and the first person that ever convinced me to coach. Steven Robbins.
One thing all of these people have in common is that they were all good athletes and, with the exception of Jessie Johnson, all around good friends of mine. Seeing them pass on has not grown any easier.
I know that bad things happen to good people. Christians will tell you it is all part of God’s plan. Other religions will tell you something similar. I take some solace in knowing that my friends have gone on to a better place.
But being a selfish person I have to say that I wish I could have more time with them. Drew and Garrett were always fun to talk sports with. I know for a fact that they both watched Sports Chat and SECW Wrestle talk back when I was a part of both shows. They both had a good knowledge of sports and it was fun to share my views with them. Aaron was always good to make me smile, especially in the days that he and the rest of the Campbell County baseball team was working out at Exercise Elite. Words can’t begin to describe what I’d do to have another day with Steven. Heck he should have been my partner on Wrestle Talk.
But I can’t see them again in this life. I am sure I will lose several more friends before all is said and done.
My heart goes out to the Johnson family. I know that, like Garrett, they are strong in their faith and it will carry them through this difficult time in their lives. Soon they will be able to look back fondly and celebrate Garrett’s life.
I know that both Garrett and his family will be on the minds and in the prayers of the local community.
