The Pat on Sports: Dealing with an ugly situation
BY PATRICK PEBLEY

Well I doubt there are many people in the area that do not know about the situation with Campbell County basketball right now. It is a tough situation and I hope things are now resolved to the point we can get on with basketball.
A lot has been said about the seven who left. The most important thing to remember is they are all good young men who may have gotten some bad advice. I do not know what the final thing was that caused seven players to not be there for Halls. I do know that these guys have played together for some time. I also know they are close to each other. I hate to see them gone from the basketball team.
I know it was a bad situation that caused Coach Pierce to be forced into midseason tryouts. It looks like he got a pretty good group though. I recognize a lot of them as former basketball players. Several of them are players I had the pleasure of coaching in football. I know that several are multisport athletes that do pretty darn well at all sports.
I also know they beat Clinton at Clinton on two days of practice; Though a lot of that success can be attributed to Corey Minton and Jonathan Green, the two remaining players from the first of the year. Those guys could not have done it without the help of their new teammates. I am looking forward to seeing this team improve and work better together.
I also have to say that I saw some of the seven former players at the game. I also saw at least one of them go up and congratulate the new team. I wouldn’t be overly shocked if the other two did as well, as these guys love the game.
I know some, if not all of the seven, are considering transferring. I actually have no problem with this. I hope they go somewhere to finish out their high school careers and maybe have a chance to play on the next level. Some school or schools will get an influx of multisport talent out of this.
The school board meeting Thursday night left everybody hanging on what their stance on the situation is. Supposedly the matter is closed and the new team and old coaching staff will remain in place. I personally don’t trust the collective school board any farther than I could toss them if they were loaded in a van. I hope they shock me and leave things as they are. It is the principal and athletic director’s jobs to deal with coaching issues.
In closing I want to see all of these athletes accomplish their goals. I hope the seven do well wherever they go and with whatever sports they chose to be involved in. I hope the new team does a good job all year, just like they did Friday night.
In closing I want to wish you all a Merry Christmas and happy holiday season. Thank you all for coming and enjoying this website.
