The Pat on Sports: Why
I Came Back
BY PATRICK PEBLEY
A few short years ago I began working for the Volunteer
Times. I ended with the job the way I have always ended
up with jobs; I stumbled into the right place at the
right time. This was the only job I ever really enjoyed.
The more I did with the Times the more I loved it. I
even ended up as Sports Editor.
Sadly these good times did not last. The Times ceased
publication a shade over a year ago. I really became
a lost soul. At one point one of my former coworkers,
who also happens to be a dear friend, and I kicked around
the idea of starting up an all sports newspaper. This
never got off the ground because of the high cost of
printing. I thought this dream was dead in the water.
A few weeks ago I started doing the PA for the Jacksboro
Eagle’s home games. I had several people tell
me how much they missed my writings. I thought to myself,
“you know something I can always publish my column
over on my other website, www.thepat.org.” I called
my Webmaster up and told him my idea. He had an even
better one. Thus www.campbellcountysports.com was born.
I am excited about this new venture. It allows me to
return to doing what I love, covering all the best in
local sports and recreation. Unfortunately I am forced
to start a little slow. My goal is to have a site that
is updated at least five times a week by the time basketball
season rolls around. I also hope to get back into the
swing of covering a variety of sports like I did at
the Times. I hope you will all be patient with me as
I get this really ramped up and going. I know those
of you who loved the sports section of the Times will
like it.
I also want to extend a very sincere thank you to all
of my family from the Volunteer Times. I would have
never discovered my love of journalism. In particular,
but in no order, I want to thank Jason Davis, Gregg
MacDonald, Earl Goodman and Kelli Jo Wright for believing
I had what it takes. This isn’t to discount all
of the help the others from the Times gave me but it
was these four that really gave me my break. I learned
a lot from everybody there. In fact I hope to at least
get some guest work from Rex Hickey and Jeremy Z. Young
in the future.
I also want to thank all of my friends who have stepped
up and got behind me on this project. I could not ask
for better people to be helping me.
This is a new concept in this area. An online only,
sports only news source. Some people will ask, “Can
it make it?” I know that answer is yes. If everybody
will stick with me I will give you a week of entertainment
and information like you have never had before.
I hope all of my readers will join up on the message
board. This is something else that sets www.campbellcountysports.com
apart from other sources. It is a completely interactive
community. I will do my best to keep it free from the
trolls that have ruined so many other local message
boards in the past.
If any of you have any story ideas feel free to add
them to the board or email me at editor@campbellcountysports.com.
I am always up for input.
